Abstract

The variations in size, position, direction of opening of the retromolar formamen and course of retromolar canal were studied with 217 mandibles of Korean adults. The retromolar region is routinely explored by oral surgeons. The objectives of the
present study were to interpret the findings in terms of their biological and clinical significance.
@ES The results were as follows :
@EN 1. A total of 11 cases were found in 217 mandibles(5.1%).
2. The diameter of the retromolar canal varied from 0.5 to 2.0mm.
3. The retromolar foramen was found in eleven of the two hundred and seventeen mandibles studied. In the side distribution of the retromolar foramen, one of them it was bilateral ; of the 10 cases in which it was unilateral, it was on the left
side in
4 cases(36.4%), and on the right side in 6 cases(54.5%). The retromoiar foramen occurred more unilaterally(91.0%) than bilaterally(9.1%).
4. The variations in the retromola foramen observed in this study were 81.8% in type1(more common type, small and facing superiorly, with a schematic representation of retromolar canal and mandibular canal) and 18.2% in type2(a large retromolar
foramen
associated with retromolar canal which during life probably conveyed the buccal nerve).
5. The direction of the opening of the retromolar canal found more superiorly than anteriorly.
